Daryl Dean Mason's Obituary
A private family graveside service will be at 3 pm, Friday, October 16, 2015 at the Ames Cemetery. Daryl requested that a party be held in his memory which will be at the MARC Center in Ringwood at 3:30 following the graveside service. Everyone is welcome to bring their memories, pictures, and instruments.
Daryl Dean (Shorty) Mason was born January 27, 1928, at Meno, Oklahoma to Ardell and Harley Mason and passed away Saturday, October 10, 2015, at Integris Bass Baptist Hospital in Enid, OK at the age of 87.
In his teenage years, Daryl lived with his Aunt Naomi and Uncle Buck Patterson in Arnett, Oklahoma where he learned to be a cowboy and participated in the rodeos as a bull and bronc rider. Uncle Buck instilled in him an appreciation of horses that he carried throughout his lifetime. He worked at several ranches until he joined the USAF in 1949 and served in the Korean War. The Air Force was his source of education through 1961. It is there his love of flying appeared. He was an airplane mechanic and took great pride in keeping those birds in the air.
It was during this time in 1957 while stationed in Harlingen, Texas Daryl met the love of his life Ellen Louise Canada of San Jose, Illinois. They married after a short courtship of four months on November 17, 1957. Out of this true love came two sons and four daughters: Diana, Gail, Gary, Pam, Tina and Charles.
Throughout the years, Daryl worked at different ranches and was the game warden in Ellis County. His love of flying never faltered. He was the Fairview Airport Manager for several years. He enjoyed sharing his passion for flying whether instructing new pilots or just taking anyone up who wanted to be in the air. Daryl was part owner and crop duster pilot of the Hicks and Mason crop dusting business. He was a cross country truck driver prior to being a dozer operator for 3M Dozer and Major County from which he retired.
Daryl enjoyed playing music and was part of the Rollis Inman Band. After retirement he continued to play music at several different places including the Fairview Fellowship Home, Fairview Senior Citizen's Center and the Marcs Retirement Center in Ringwood.
Daryl's greatest enjoyment in life was his grandchildren. There was an understanding with the grandchildren if they were in trouble at home and needed a way out of it, they could call 1-800-Grandpa and he would come get them anytime which to the dismay of Daryl's kids, some of the grandchildren tried.
Daryl is survived by his wife Ellen of the home, daughter Diana Fielder and husband T.J. of Ames, daughter Gail Mason of Enid, son Gary Mason and wife Jan, of Belle Plaine, KS, daughter Pam Quimby and husband Gary of Hennessey and daughter Tina Bode and husband Bill of Ames; nine grandchildren, Jessica Skinner and husband John of Satellite Beach, FL, Jamie Roberts and husband Jason of Enid, Jodie Fazendine and husband Matt of Tulsa, Nicole Mason of Tulsa, Cody Quimby and wife Ashley of Edmond, Kelli Quimby of Hennessey, Andrew Mason and fiancée Trisha of Belle Plaine, KS, Ashle Bode and Mason Bode of Ames; six great-grandchildren and one step great grandchild: Jordynne Skinner, Justin Skinner, Nathan Skinner, Jayson Skinner, Ciara Roberts, Isaac Roberts and Christa Skinner; brother Kenneth Mason and wife Vada of Paris, TX, sisters, Betty Matthews and husband Phil of Carthage, Ark, Mert Mason of Ringwood, Harlene Johnson of Hideaway, TX, Mary Woodward and husband Jerry of Shawnee, OK and sister-in-law Sherilyn Mason of Ringwood; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Daryl was preceded in death by his son Charles Andrew Mason, parents Harley and Ardell (Wysong) Mason and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Jody Mason and wife Sylvia, and Chip Mason.
In Lue of flowers, memorial may be made throught the Fairview Funeral Home to the ALS Society, American Cancer Society, Ames Fire Department or the Ringwood Fire Department.
