Gretta was from a large family of nine children.  She was raised in the Cheyenne Valley and Fairview communities and graduated from Cheyenne Valley High School.  After she graduated from high school, she and her sister Hazel, got an apartment in Fairview and moved to town.  Gretta met a young man that had just returned home for WWII by the name of Junior Henry "Dude" Howerton.  On March 8, 1947, they were married and started their life together.  They celebrated 68 years of marriage before Dude died in 2015.  In 1948 the couple was blessed with their only son Rick.  Dude worked in the oil field and they moved around with his work.  In 1959 they moved to Hamilton, Texas and Dude worked as a supervisor for a construction company.  Later he took a job with the Texas Department of Transportation where he eventually retired.

Gretta's primary job was house wife and mother, raising their son Rick.  However, She also was a beautician and ran a beauty salon in her home.   Gretta and Dude spent a lot of their free time playing cards and square dancing.  She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Fairview and her faith in Christ was a very important part of her life.  She was a sweet and graceful lady that was loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dude, four sisters and two brothers.
