Obituary

Hazel Ann Roberts passed away unexpectedly on May 1, 2025. She was born January 10, 1942 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma to Vernon Thomas Kilpatrick and Pauline Lucille Baremore Kilpatrick. She was baptized in the Pawhuska, Oklahoma Nazarene Church. Hazel attended school in Pawhuska and graduated as valedictorian in 1960. Later, she attended college at Bethany Nazarene College, Oklahoma graduating in 1964 with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. During her college years in Bethany, Oklahoma, she met Loyal O'Neal Roberts and they married December 31, 1964. Within a couple of years, they moved to Loyal's hometown of Fairview, Oklahoma. She became a faithful member of the Fairview Mennonite Brethren Church.

Hazel taught third grade at Fairview Public Schools until she and Loyal started their family. Later, Hazel would resume teaching as a special education teacher's aide, and she received a Master's degree in Special Education from Southwestern University in 1991. Hazel tutored many students during summer breaks and helped many obtain their GED.

Hazel loved serving in church. For many years she taught Wednesday night Bible classes for elementary aged kids. Hazel sang in the church choir and served as one of the church pianists. She enjoyed playing in ensembles on piano and accordion. Hazel's love for teaching and music also extended outside of church. She taught piano lessons for decades even until days before her passing.

Hazel's many talents included gardening, sewing, and homemaking. She shared these talents at the Major County Fair exhibiting canned pickles, beets, and peaches, clothing and embroidery, and her delicious homemade bread. Often, she had award winning entries. She was especially delighted to contribute her bread for the auction at the Mennonite Central Committee relief sale.

Hazel also was a talented seamstress making her own clothing and her children's. She was known for her ability to tailor clothing, especially wedding and prom dresses.

Hazel Ann is preceded in death by her husband and parents. She is survived by her children Steven Roberts (Laura) of Colleyville, Texas; Kevin Roberts (Jamie) of Dallas, Texas; Susan Chesnut (Jeff) of Rush Springs, Oklahoma and by her four grandchildren Aaron Chesnut, Julianna Chesnut, William Roberts, and Ana Roberts.
