Obituary

Funeral Services for Jimmie "Jim" R. Slater, 65, of Fairview, will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church, Fairview, Oklahoma. The Reverends Richert Redinger and Doyle Newsom will officiate. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Fairview. Arrangements are by Fairview Funeral Home, Inc.

Viewing will be Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Fairview Funeral Home Inc.

Jimmie "Jim" R. Slater was born February 12, 1944 in Fairview Oklahoma to Alfred Earl Slater and Bessie Alta (Noble) Slater and passed away Thursday, September 10, 2009 at, St. Anthony's Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Jim grew up in Cheyenne Valley, Oklahoma, attended Cheyenne Valley High School and graduated in 1962. At the age of 14, Jim would go on a harvesting crew every summer, had his own combine at sixteen and ran his own crew for over 50 years. They cut wheat and grass from Texas to Montana. Jim farmed and ranched in and around the Fairview area all of his life.

He attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University and received his BA in 1966. Jim married Linda Edwards August 30, 1964 at the Cheyenne Valley Methodist Church. In the fall of 1966, Jim obtained his first teaching job in Fairview, as a math instructor and coach. While teaching at Fairview he went to Southwestern Oklahoma State University and completed his Masters Degree. He became Assistant High School Principle for a few years and then served as High School Principle for 16 years, retiring in 2003.

Jim was a member of the Fairview First United Methodist Church and served on many boards and committees. He was very active in the Fairview community; was currently serving as the President of the Fairview Lion's Club, was a member of the Farm Bureau Board, the 2 Cylinder Club, U.S. Custom Harvesters, and was former president of both the Oklahoma Association of Secondary School Principles and the Co-operative Council of Oklahoma School Administrators. Jim dabbled in state politics and ran for the Oklahoma House of Representatives in 2004. He enjoyed hunting quail and pheasant, and restoring old tractors and cars. He taught his grandson Alex how to hunt and fish. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend to many and a valuable member of the Fairview community. He will be greatly missed.

Jim is survived by wife Linda Slater, of Fairview; one daughter, Amy Dawn Barrett and husband Randy of Alva, Oklahoma; two brothers, Jerry Earl Slater of Waynoka, Oklahoma and Carl Alfred Slater and wife Robin of Seattle, Washington; one grandson, Alex Barrett and wife Colleen; and one great-granddaughter, Evaline Barrett.

His parents preceded him in death.

Memorials may be made to the Cheyenne Valley Gym or Alumni Association with Fairview Funeral Home, Inc. acting as custodians of the fund.
