John Calvin
"Cal" Davis
Jan 7, 1932 — Jun 11, 2021
Fairview
Funeral services for John Calvin "Cal" Davis, 89 of Fairview will be 1:00 P.M., Monday, June 14, 2021, in the Fairview First United Methodist Church with burial following in the Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements by Fairview Funeral Home, Inc.
John Calvin Davis, 89 of Fairview, OK went to be with the Lord on 6-11-21 at the Fairview Fellowship Home. Cal was born January 7, 1932 in Isabella, OK to Jacob William Davis and Emma Lydia Wenger. Cal had two brothers, Billy who died at a young age, and Robert Lewis Davis of Fairview.
After attending Progressive School through the eighth grade, Cal graduated from Fairview High School in 1950. He grew to love football even though he had never even seen a game until attending Fairview High School where he achieved All District Guard and All State Alternate. Cal also participated in track and was active in FFA.
After high school, he worked for Don Bair's Flying & Spraying Service and learned to fly and purchased his first plane in 1952. On 11-14-52, he was called into the military service and went to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Cal and Nella Jean Wheeler were married on 11-7-1954 (only after he arrived home from Korea on 10-28-1954 barely in time for the wedding). They soon moved to York, Nebraska to work for Don Bair. They moved to Tulsa and he worked for Tulsa Public Service and John Wheatley Pumps. During that busy time, he attended one semester at Tulsa University. He was then called back in to the Army during the Berlin Crisis to Ft. Polk moving his family to Alexandria, LA.
After returning from Ft. Polk, they moved back to Ames, OK for a short period then to Fairview to work with his dad at Davis Supply. Following his dad's death from a car accident, Cal ran the business for a time. He later became an electrician working for Gary Just Electric, David Haegle Electric and eventually had his own business Davis Electric. He then became interested in law enforcement and became a reserve deputy. He served as Undersheriff of Major County for Sheriff Jerry Metz. When Jerry retired, Cal became sheriff in 1991 until 1998. He retired due to being diagnosed with cancer. He took his job as sheriff very seriously and really hated to retire, but felt it was the right choice for the family and the community he served.
His life was one of service to others, asking nothing in return. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and was active in Methodist Men. He loved the Lord and looked to him for guidance. He was an active member of Oklahoma Sheriffs Association, Northwest Oklahoma Law Enforcement Association and former member of Lion's Club.
He is survived by his wife, Nell, of 66 years, daughter Debbie Lea Davis Barby of Cheney, KS, son, John Robert "Bob" Davis and wife Holly of Fairview, OK and daughter Sally Ann Davis Jantz and husband Terry of Healdton, OK. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fairview Methodist Church or the Sheriff Association with Fairview Funeral Home, Inc acting as custodian.
