Funeral services for John Richard (Dick) Shewey will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 11, 2008 at the Fairview Mennonite Brethren Church. Burial will follow in the North Mennonite Brethren Cemetery. The Rev. Brad Penner will officiate. Arrangements are by Fairview Funeral Home, Inc.

Viewing will be Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Family visitation will be between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Fairview Funeral Home, Inc.

John Richard (Dick) Shewey was born December 13, 1940 to John Wheat and Elizabeth Jane (Wright) Shewey in Orienta, Oklahoma and died December 7, 2008.
Dick along with his brothers, Bill and Jerry, were raised by his parents on a farm in Orienta. His youth was spent learning the hard work on the farm. He milked cows, tilled the soil, and helped raise the family livestock. Dick attended Orienta grade school then graduated from Fairview High School in 1958.
He attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University in the fall of 1958. After one semester, he decided that postage was too expensive and joined his high school sweetheart, Marcia Anne Kliewer, at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas. Dick and Marcia were married on November 5, 1960. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1963, spending most of his tour of duty as a medic in Heidelberg, West Germany. Dick and Marcia were blessed with three sons, Andy, Stan and Dale. After college, Dick joined his father in the farming business. He farmed for approximately 40 years in the Orienta area, raising wheat, cattle, and alfalfa. In 1981, Dick and his brother Bill built and operated the Red Shed in Orienta until 1994. After farming Dick became a custodian at the Fairview Mennonite Brethren Church, a job he continued until July, 2008.
Dick had an extreme love for his family, friends, farming and construction. He enjoyed entertaining large groups of people around a table of food. Over the years his interests allowed him to serve on the Orienta Cooperative Board, as Chairman of the Fairview Fellowship Home Phase I construction, Federal Land Bank, and Fairview Mennonite Brethren Church building committee. He also served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. Dick had a love for family, Oklahoma and Mennonite history. He taught several Mennonite History classes over the years. Dick enjoyed visiting his boys and grandchildren. He found great enjoyment in Hillsboro, Kansas with Andy's family and Tabor College. He loved the farmland and children's activities of Stan's family in Meade, Kansas. Visiting Dale and Shawna in Chicago satisfied his desire for baseball and people watching.
Dick is survived by his wife Marcia of the home; three sons Andy and wife Kerry of Hillsboro, Kansas, Stan and wife Rebecca of Meade, Kansas, and Dale and wife Shawna of Gilberts, Il; five grandchildren; Clay and Grant Shewey of Hillsboro, Kierra, Vance and Kyra Shewey of Meade; one brother Bill and wife Jana of Enid, Oklahoma.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jane Shewey and his brother Jerry Shewey.

Memorials may be made to the Fairview Mennonite Brethren Church or Tabor College, with Fairview Funeral Home, Inc. serving as custodians of the funds.
