Funeral Services for Joseph "Vern" Davis, 86, will be 1:30 p.m., Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the Coldwater Christian Church, Coldwater, Kansas. Reverend Virgil White will officiate. Burial will follow in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Coldwater, Kansas. Arrangements are being made by Fairview Funeral Home, Inc.

Joseph "Vern" Davis was born July 1, 1922 to Joseph E. and Maude (Smith) Davis in Greensburg, Kansas and passed away November 10, 2008 at the Fairview Regional Medical Center.

Vern grew-up in Greensburg, Kansas where he attended school till the 8th grade. He then went to work for his uncle on a farm in western Kansas. Vern continued to farm until he moved to Wilmore, Kansas and went to work for the Yorks. While working at the Yorks he met Doris as he watched over the fence as she picked strawberries. They were later married on May 1, 1941 in Greensburg, Kansas. After they were married they moved to Wichita, Kansas and Vern worked at a machine operator in a woodworking business.

November 1942 Vern joined the United States Army and served in WWII until his discharge in 1945. During Vern's service in the Army, he was a halftrack driver and saw action in the African Theater and the European Theater. He saw action in the Battle of the Bulge. While he was away at war, they were blessed with the arrival of a baby girl, Marilyn. After his Honorable Discharge from World War II, they moved to Wilmore, Kansas and worked at a grain elevator.

A few years later, he moved his family to Coldwater, Kansas and became an independent contractor for Standard Oil as a truck driver. Vern and Doris moved around as his job transferred them.

Vern and Doris were blessed with the arrival of two boys. Jim was born in 1947 and in 1955, Terry was born. In 1959 Vern moved his family to Pratt Kansas and then to Woodward in 1968. In 1971, they made their final move to Fairview where he worked for Delhi as a dispatcher until he retired in 1986. Vern and Doris enjoyed traveling and have been doing so for the past 20 years spending the winters in Arizona and summers in Colorado. Vern loved fishing and most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Vern is survived by his wife of 67 years Doris of the home; two sons, Jim and wife Ann of Elizabeth, Colorado, and Terry and wife Sidonna of Woodward, Oklahoma; 2 brothers, Carl Davis of Bucklin, Kansas, Kenneth Davis of Aurora, Colorado; two sisters, Lucille Smith of Coldwater, Kansas, France Branstetter of Turpin, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Shannon Edmonds and husband Randy of Coppell, Texas, Dustin Davis and wife Wendy of Saginaw, Texas, Joshua Davis of Littleton, Colorado, and Jorden Davis of Azle, Texas; 2 great grandchildren, Kendall and Kylie Edmonds; along with a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter, Marilyn, and three brothers.
