Lenard Roy Thompson's Obituary
Funeral Services for Lenard Roy Thompson, 91, will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 30, 2015, at the Central Christian Church in Fairview, Oklahoma. The Reverend Charlie Newman and Ronnie Hopkins will officiate. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements are by Fairview Funeral Home, Inc.
Lenard Roy (Drake) Thompson was born July 25, 1924, at his family's home in Cedar Springs, west of Fairview, to Roy Grant Thompson and Anna (Larsen) Thompson and passed away on November 25, 2015 in Fairview, Oklahoma.
He attended grade school at Longdale, then his first two years of high school at Fairview before returning to Longdale to graduate in 1942. Lenard was the youngest of 9 children and helped his father on the family farm while his older brothers were serving in the military overseas during WWII. Lenard entered the Army Air Force in 1945 and served Stateside.
He married Collene Custer on July 17, 1949, at Midway Assembly of God and they celebrated 66 years of marriage this year. They made their home west of Fairview, until 1958 when they moved into Fairview. Lenard worked seasonal jobs, such as mowing highway right of ways, in an attempt to support his farming habit. However, as children were added to the union, he began working full time at the gypsum plant in Southard and later gained employment with the Army Corps of Engineers, first in core drilling around the state of Oklahoma in advance of building the various lakes we all enjoy today, and later full-time at Canton Lake as a mechanic and general maintenance. He retired with 30 years of service in May 1989. His children were always proud of the various amenities in the camping areas that Dad built, such as playground equipment and bathroom/shower houses.
Lenard was a member of Midway Assembly of God Church and served through the years as Sunday school teacher, church secretary and Deacon. He was instrumental in building their beautiful new sanctuary. He became a member of Fairview First Assembly of God when the Midway church was merged into the Fairview congregation. He was also a member of the American Legion and enjoyed his many friendships there. He could always be counted on to fire a gun at a fellow brother's funeral or carry a flag in a parade. Raising cattle and farming remained Lenard's hobby throughout his life. He greatly enjoyed visiting his farm near Chester, Oklahoma, and following the developing oil and gas activity around that area. In the past he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. In more recent years, he was a regular card and domino player at the Fairview Senior Citizens Center where he had many dear friends.
Dad has always been our pillar of strength and a good example of how to live one's life with humor and dedication to God and family. We shall miss him forever, but he is so indelibly a part of our lives and personalities that it really won't seem he is gone. When Collene became incapacitated with Alzheimer's disease, he stepped up to the plate and became her full-time caregiver and keeper of the home, never complaining. Dad could often be heard whistling a tune or singing a song as he went about some of the most arduous tasks. He truly relied on his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for strength each day.
Lenard is survived by three daughters, Reda and Gary Jones, LaDonna and Jack Gibson all of Tuttle, OK, and Brenda and Michael Reardon of Blanchard, OK, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren, with one on the way, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Collene, a son, Lenard Keith, as well as four brothers and four sisters.
The family would like to say a special thank you to everyone who helped to care for Dad at the Fairview Fellowship Home, including Faith Hospice, during this past month of November. So many went above and beyond their call to duty and we hope they know we noticed and appreciated the loving care shown to him.
