Marie Penner's Obituary
Funeral Services for Marie Penner, age 83, of Fairview, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturdays, August 20, 2016 at the Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Fairview. The Reverend Robert Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in the Cedar Cemetery. Arrangements are by Fairview Funeral Home, Inc.
Our loving mother, grandma and granny, Marie Koehn Penner was born January 29, 1933 to Edward and Ida Koehn at Camp 45, Chihuahua, Mexico. She went to rest in the arms of Jesus on August 15, 2016, after a short battle with lung cancer, reaching the age of 83 years, 7 months and 17 days.
Marie grew up in Mexico in a small adobe house with her brothers and sisters. As a small girl she helped with chores, cooking and often hauling firewood. At harvest time she picked corn along with the rest of the family. After working in the fields she would go wade in the creek before evening chores. In 1944 she moved with her family to Saltillo. They rode a train and she really enjoyed that. Her parents built a four room house in Saltillo for nine children and grandma to live in. She continued to help her parents on the farm until a tractor and truck were brought over for them to use. She often spoke of how fun she thought it was to ride in the back of that truck. During her teenage years she gave her heart to her Lord and Savior and remained faithful to her vow.
In 1951, Marie moved to Kansas with her parents, one brother and two sisters and at the age of 18 became a United States citizen. In Kansas she worked for her sister Sadie helping care for the new baby and later working at a chicken plant before becoming a cook and house keeper at a nursing home.
She married Melvin Dale Penner October 22, 1961 in Moundridge, Kansas. They made their home in Isabella, Oklahoma and welcomed one son and one daughter into their lives. Marie was a homemaker for many years before working as a house keeper. She continued to clean houses until her retirement.
She enjoyed sewing, baking and crocheting. Marie taught her granddaughters to bake what their friends referred to as "Grandma Penner cookies". Many times her granddaughters would call to order these cookies on weekends when they were home from college.
When illness caused her to need daily trips to Enid for treatments she still maintained her cheerful attitude often expressing how thankful she was for all the ladies who helped transport her. She enjoyed her visits with everyone during those drives.
Marie loved visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren, listening to their stories about school and the activities they were doing. She loved to watch her great grandchildren run and play and laughed when they rode around in her wheelchair. She enjoyed letting them push her down the hall and always wanted to be sure everyone around her knew that the one pushing her was one of her great grandchildren.
In August 2015, she moved to the Fairview Fellowship Home with her husband Melvin and made her home there until our Heavenly Father called her home. Marie enjoyed her life at the Fellowship Home, making new friends, attending activities and crocheting her doilies. She often said the food was so good and how nice it was not to have to worry about cooking. After Melvin passed away she missed him very much but continued on and even commented how she was learning to do so many things on her own.
Marie leaves to mourn her passing, one son, Gary Penner of Isabella, one daughter, Berneta Kimbrell of Enid, three granddaughters, Becky and husband Greg Burt, Holly Weidner, and Victoria Kimbrell all of Enid, four great grandchildren, Alexzander, Wyatt, Brinley and Grady, who will miss their dear granny very much, one brother, Henry Koehn and wife Gladys of Tupelo, Mississippi, five sisters, Pauline Jantzen of Chico, California, Maggie Base of Homeworth, Ohio, Ester Unruh of Moundridge, Kansas, Hanna Koehn of Moundridge, Kansas, Eva and husband Benton Smith of Nevada, Missouri, two sisters-in-law, Betty Penner of Moundridge, Kansas and Lou Ella Deming of Livingston, California, many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Preceding her in death are her loving husband, Melvin, her parents Edward and Ida Koehn, one brother and one sister in infancy, one brother, Walter Koehn, two sisters, Bertha Smith and Sadie Braun, one sister-in-law and five brothers-in-law.
