Obituary

Funeral Service for Shirley Arlene Doane, 86, of Tempe, Arizona, will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 4, 2021 at the Fairview First Baptist Church followed by burial in the Fairview Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Fairview Funeral Home, Inc.

Shirley Arlene Doane age 86 passed away Saturday, November 27, 2021.

Shirley was born May 20, 1935. She was delivered by her Grandma Sunderland on the Sunderland farm. Shirley's dad, Paul Sunderland had to ride horseback to fetch the nearest doctor during inclement weather.

Because her dad worked on the Santa Fe Railroad, the family moved to many locations. Shirley started 1st grade in Las Vegas, New Mexico, attended 2nd-3rd grades in Yewed, OK and finally 4th grade and on in Fairview, OK. It was as a freshman that she served as a Football Queen for Fairview High.

After marrying Kenneth, (Ken) her high school sweetheart, they moved to Wichita for Ken's new job working at Boeing and started their family. They had two children, Debbie and Kent. Shirley was a "hands-on" mom. She was a brownie leader, room mom, PTA President, made dance costumes, cheered Kent on in Little League, and was always there for a hug and to listen. A favorite quote of hers was, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."

Finding importance in education, Shirley attended Wichita State University and completed her college degree in social work. In 1976 she happily walked in her graduation ceremony along with daughter Debbie.

American Red Cross became her employer where she worked from 1975-1992. She started as a case worker, then supervisor, and as a co-assistant director in Emergency Social Services where she found working with her clients and in disaster relief very rewarding.

As a "people person" Shirley had an infectious laugh and enjoyed visiting with others. Who else could meet a total stranger and in ten minutes tell you all about their family, personal history and send them off with a set of dishes?

Before her failing eyesight Shirley enjoyed reading, doing crosswords, playing cards, watching little kids and puppies. Her favorite thing was being with family and friends. Shirley was her family's biggest champion, supporting her children and grandchildren through life's ups and downs.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents Marjorie Crabtree, Paul Sunderland and by her husband Kenneth. She is survived by daughter Debbie Lind (Wildwood, MO), son Kent and daughter-in-law Janice Doane (Tempe, AZ), grandchildren Jenny Doane (Tempe, AZ), Andrew Lind and Bryan Hendrickson (Neenah, WI), and Jessica and Rusty Page (Libertyville, IL).

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
